Why Bother Meditating? with Rahma Muhammad Mian

What is meditation, and why is it suddenly being prescribed for various mental health issues? Should everyone meditate? Who should not meditate? What about people too busy to meditate?

This interactive session with Rahma Muhammad Mian will focus on critical questions about meditation and its purported effects.

Rahma Muhammad Mian is a somatic therapist and yoga teacher. Their trauma focused bodywork practice and teaching is grounded in their Vipassana practice. An active part of the local Vipassana community, Rahma along with other mindfulness practitioners and teachers in the city have been organizing the Karachi Sangha since 2018.

Rahma’s trained in Hatha yoga from South India and is a registered teacher (RYT-200) with Yoga Alliance. They are also trained in Ihsaas, a trauma-informed, somatic healing programme designed primarily for Muslim women as well as western trauma and somatic focused trainings. They are also a qi gong and reiki practitioner.

Rahma also teaches science, technology and society, and critical media and cultural studies to undergraduates at the Social Sciences and Liberal Arts program at IBA, Karachi.

As an educator, Rahma is committed to bringing mindfulness to classrooms and educational institutions. They regularly work with young children, adolescents, and teens and have taught breath and bodywork to children aged 3-5 years at Veritas Learning Circle, and 13-15 year olds at Zindagi Trust schools. Expanding on this work with children and young people, they have also conducted workshops with parents and teachers at various institutions in the city.
